Film reviews

Titantic 3D 8/10
Was the first film I’d watched in the nu-school 3d format. Was surprised by how little it added to the film in terms of spectacle. Another surprise was that I seemed to enjoy the story more second time around. The ‘modern’ bits were just plain weird juxtaposed against the body of the film. Anyway, favourite scene was of course Kate Winslet axe in hand up to her oxters in water.

Avengers Assemble 3D 6/10
It probably shows how out of touch I am that I had no idea until the end credits that the film was by Joss Whedon. I have no idea about all the back story of the other characters only know Iron Man from the other films. So as a newbie was a but lost by all the references, huh, eh, got in the way of me following the plot. Ok I will admit to laughing at the Shakepeare in the park line, but only because I was thinking in the previous scene what’s with all the faux Shakespeare family saga shit Thor/Loki. The longer the film went on the more I realised I didn’t give a shit about what happened to any of the characters. So little rounding of characters. Yawning at all the CGI made worse by sitting behind folk in those daft dbox seats that move around. Yep, disappointed. Rapidly coming to think that Joss Whedon is the Orson Welles of his generation…did all his best work early on and each subsequent project gets more self-indulgent but leaves the audience behind. Oh well.

Beauty and the Beast 3D 7/10
And I think 4 of those marks are entirely for a small but perfectly formed role for Angela Lansbury as a singing teapot, Hell yeah! Brownie points for the heroine shunning the would be handsome wooer and loving books. As a Disney fan could see more clearly some of the back references to films like Sleeping Beauty. A simple story, simply told, and you care about what happens to the characters, take note Joss. Also a big oomph is for the fandabidozi songs the production number Be our guest would put Busby Berkley to shame. Joyous stuff.

Cate Blanchett to star in film of 1950s lesbian novel - PinkPaper.com →

Ooh, should be good, I trust Cate. Carol is a delicious wee novella, you can read it in a day. Nothing explicit but so full of *longing*.

Donna Summer RIP

Damn it, another chunk of my youth gone, I’m a similar vintage to Kylie, it’s hard to convey now just how songs like “I feel love” changed the music scene and made such an impression at the time.
